This course will be of interest to a wide range of students: philosophers, political scientists, ecologists, environmental scientists, and biologists. Philosophy + Literature is a unique initiative that brings together faculty from more than 10 departments, along with curious undergraduate and graduate students, to ask and answer big questions. For example: Courses meet each day (Monday–Friday) for live, virtual classroom discussion led by Stanford graduate student teaching assistants.

Philosophy (PHIL) courses: Required course: PHIL 80 Mind, Matter, and Meaning (5 units). 16 units, including at least one Philosophy course from each of the following areas: Logic and philosophy of science: Students take either one from this list or an intermediate philosophy of science course numbered PHIL 160-169.

At least one year experience teaching at the high school or college level, or equivalent. Eligibility to work in the U.S. (Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.) Courses in the major equip students with core skills involved in critical reading, analytical thinking, sound argumentation, and the clear, well-organized expression of ideas. PHIL 100-103 are surveys of important figures and movements in Western philosophy.

God, Self, and World: An Introduction to Philosophy Topics: evolutionary versus proximate causal explanations of behavior; genetic and other determinisms; and classification and measurement of behavior. Prerequisites: 167A; or one PHIL course and either one BIO course or Human Biology core; or equivalent with consent of instructor. 4 units, not given this year.

All courses are taught by notable Stanford faculty and instructors, experienced professionals, and leaders in their fields. Courses meet each day (Monday–Friday) for live, virtual classroom discussion led by Stanford graduate student teaching assistants. A live class period will be held at both 8:00–9:30am and 4:00–5:30pm PDT, and participants will attend just one of the available meeting times. Most courses meet on Stanford’s campus in the evenings, or on a Saturday. And, for those students who can’t easily make it to campus, we now offer a growing number of online courses across various disciplines.
